Couple listening to baby's heart

A baby heartbeat monitor, otherwise known as a fetal Doppler,   is effectively an ultrasound device that allows parents to listen to their baby's heartbeat during the most critical stages of pregnancy.

The baby heart monitor provides audio or visual simulation of the baby’s heartbeat allowing the parent to hear or see a visual representation of the beating heart

The baby heart monitor is an important device for prenatal care because it gives the parents some reassurance that the baby is health and safe, without the need to visit the doctor every single day.

A baby heartbeat monitor is similar to a stethoscope in that it provides similar information, more so it has an added benefit because it allows multiple people to listen the baby’s beating heart because the audio simulation is often played back through an integrated speaker.

The monitor may also provide a visual representation depending on the type of baby heartbeat monitor it is. Some provide audio representations, others provide visual representations and there are even some on the market which provide both audio and visual simulations of the baby’s heartbeat.

The purpose of this site is to show you what baby heart monitors are currently on the market with links for you to find out further information quickly and easily.

Summer Infant Prenatal Heart Listening System

Manufacturer: Summer Infant
Price: £24.99

This clever device allows you and your partner to hear your babys heart beat.

2 sets of headphones are included to allow both parents to listen to foetal sounds such as heart beat and hiccups.

The sounds can be downloaded to your home computer as a keepsake or to send to family members. This is NOT a doppler and does not transmit ultrasound waves to your baby.

This is not a medical device and should not replace normal medical supervision.

Allows you to hear and share your baby’s heart beat from around 21 weeks Safe and non-invasive 2 sets of headphones

Our Verdict

This product is slighlty different because it is not a doppler and doesn't use ultrasound waves. However it still works very well! The best thing about these products is the fact that whenever you worry that you haven't felt movement you can switch it on and listen to your baby's heartbeat to be reassured. Our demo unit was delivered at about 25 weeks and we could certainly hear the heartbeat then, but the box does warn that it can be a lot later than this before you are able to hear a heart beat. It will depend on the position of the baby and, to delicately say it, the weight of the mother!

Manufacturer: Babymad
Price: £36.12

The Babymad Pocket Fetal Doppler is a small handheld piece of medical equipment used for detecting Fetal Heart Rate (FHR), specially for pregnant women and baby's parents to conduct a daily detection of FHR and listen to the sound of the heart beat.

This fetal Doppler is suitable for use by expectant mothers as early as the 12th week of pregnancy, it also can be used by obstetricians and midwives and can be connected to a computer to record the fetal heart sound and thus share baby's heart beat with family and friends.

The screen will be locked automatically without signal for 15 seconds, which is convenient for pregnant women to operate individually.

Our Verdict

This product works very well indeed. You can pick up baby's heart beat very easily. If baby is lying with its back to your front there is a strong pickup. Otherwise, you may have to poke the doppler into the side, top or bottom of your lump to try to get a good sound, but I've never been unable to find a heartbeat somewhere, even if it's a bit faint due to awkward positioning. If you leave the doppler on the heartbeat for a short while, the heartbeats per minute show up on the LCD screen and that's very reassuring.

Manufacturer: Sonotrax
Price: £61.00

This is a high performance model. It has audio output, and can connect with earphone or recorder with audio input. Does NOT have an LCD display. The Sonotrax A has a slim, power saving and interchangeable waterproof 2MHz ultrasound probe.

This model plays the baby's heartbeat via a loud speaker so does not require headphones, this means that you and others can share in the magic of listening to the baby's heart beat at the same time.

This Fetal Doppler will enable you to hear the heartbeat and movements of your unborn baby from the twelfth week of pregnancy. Listen to the sounds of his or her heart beat and you may even hear hiccups, kicks, blows and baby's first movements.

It is superb value for money the sound quality is excellent you will not be disappointed!!! 1 x 250ml Bottle of UltraSound Gel is also included.

Our Verdict

This an excellent product. It is almost the same quality as the one that our midwife used and baby's heartbeat could be heard as early as 11-12 weeks. We had no difficulty finding baby's heartbeat and hearing it very clearly. I would purchase again. It comes with one bottle of ultrasound gel.

Box Contains

  • AngelSound Fetal Heart Detector (Doppler)
  • Headphones
  • Recording cable
  • 9v Battery
  • 2 CD's
  • Instruction Manual

Our Verdict

This is the first monitor we purchased before we decided to create this crazy blog. We got the angelsounds after reading reviews and it totally lived up to expectations. I don't think there was a time when we didn't find our baby's heart beat eventually - sometimes it would be fainter than others depending on baby's position and sometimes sounds of my own heartbeat/pulse/placenta pulse etc would get in the way but to be honest even they were fascinating to listen to!

Using one of these devices really is a great piece of mind and both my husband and I enjoyed counting how many beats per minute our little baby was beating too.

A word of warning though if you do buy one, just be  prepared for the fact that sometimes, due to positon, you may not find your babies heart beat for a while, this is normal!
